As the town suggests, Coalville is a former coal mining town, the name of which came form the 'Coalville House' the residence of the owner of Whitwick Colliery
In 1833 the Leicester and Swannington Railway reached Coalville at a small station at Long Lane, now called Ashby Road
There is a museum at Snibston which ia housed at a disused colliery. There is also a theatre on the complex
